Pokémon Go secrets and Easter eggs

Every Pokmon game is full of secrets – after all, what’s the use of having hundreds of Pokmon if some aren’t hidden away somewhere? – and Pokmon Go is no different, with a handful of neat Easter eggs that reference the TV show or classic games that you probably don’t even know are there.

In this article we’re discussing specific Easter eggs or secrets that require specific steps to discover, but that’s not to say there’s plenty of other hidden tricks too – if you want to access menu shortcuts, interact with PokeStops faster or uncover each Pokmon’s hidden stats, then check out our Pokmon Go tips, tricks and cheats page.

Start the game with Pikachu instead of Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle

Referencing the anime as well as first generation game Pokmon Yellow, there’s a way to ignore traditional starters Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle and go for everyone’s favourite electric rat Pikachu.

When you start a new game, you’ll be given the choice between the usual three starters, but you should ignore them; instead, walk away in the opposite direction (don’t worry, they won’t interact with you unless you tap them) until they reappear back in front of you. Continue this process until Pikachu appears alongside them.

If you want to know more about this – including a video of it in action, as well as the many ways you can catch all four starters later in the game – then read our page on how to catch Pikachu as your starter and out in the wild in Pokmon Go.

Pikachu can become your best Buddy

In another Pikachu-themed secret, there’s a way for you to become as close to Pikachu as Ash Ketchum was in the TV show, and that’s with lots of TLC. In the Buddy feature that was introduced in the game’s September update, walk with the Pokmon for 10 kilometres (without evolving and, though unconfirmed but to be safe, without swapping it out for another Pokmon) and it’ll move from standing beside your trainer to cheerfully sitting on their shoulder!

A reference to the TV show is used to change how Eevee evolves

Eevee – the uncommon normal-type Pokmon that can evolve into one of three elemental Types in the base game, and many more in later generations – has a special trick to the way you evolve it.

By renaming the Pokmon after one of the three Eevee trainers that appear in the TV show – Rainer for Vaporeon, Sparky for Jolteon and Pyro for Flareon – it’ll transform into that type when you choose to evolve it. This is especially useful since Vaporeon is one of the best Pokmon in Pokmon Go, or if you need to guarantee the right evolution to fill out your Pokedex.
